KATIE PORTER STANDS UP TO THE NRA, TAKES THE LEAD IN FIGHTING FOR COMMON-SENSE GUN LAWS IN CA-45

Katie Porter Hand-Delivered Nearly 40,000 Signatures to Rep. Mimi Walters’ Office Demanding Common-Sense Gun Laws, Siding with CA-45 Constituents and Standing Up to the NRA

Irvine -- Leading congressional candidate Katie Porter today joined supporters in delivering nearly 40,000 signatures demanding Rep. Mimi Walters stand up for her constituents by refusing all money from the NRA and supporting common-sense gun laws -- including universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity clips. Katie has earned the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.

“Like many of you, I am tired of seeing Mimi Walters offer her thoughts and prayers after every mass shooting, and then voting however the NRA wants -- regardless of our families’ safety,” said Katie Porter.

“You know what I am fighting for? A ban on assault weapons so that dozens don’t die in a matter of minutes, mandatory background checks on all gun sales, and a healthcare system that provides comprehensive mental health treatment.

“Orange County families have made their feelings heard, time and again, that common-sense gun protections are our values. That’s why I am here today, and that’s why I am running for Congress - to stand up to special interests like the NRA and stand up for Orange County families.”

Katie joined other candidates across the country delivering petitions today to build momentum for this Saturday, when thousands of Americans will come together for the massive "March for our Lives" events driven by the student survivors of the Parkland school shooting. Katie will be speaking at the March for our Lives event in Irvine at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

Katie has not only refused to accept money from the NRA, she has pledged since day one of her campaign not to accept campaign contributions from corporate PACs, big banks, big oil, big pharma, or private charter schools. She is proudly endorsed by End Citizens United, a grassroots organization dedicated to countering the disastrous effects of Citizens United and reforming our campaign finance system.

Katie earned early endorsements from Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren and was the first House challenger to receive the endorsement from EMILY’s List. She has also earned endorsements from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and End Citizens United.

Katie Porter is a UC Irvine Professor of Law, mother of three, and consumer advocate who has spent decades taking on the big banks that hurt middle-class families – and winning. Now, she's taking that fight against the powerful special interests to Washington.
