Katie Porter's Statement on Mimi Walters' $20,000 Payment to Cambridge Analytica

Irvine -- Consumer protection attorney and leading Democratic congressional candidate Katie Porter (CA-45) released the following statement today about her opponent Mimi Walters' $20,000 payment to Cambridge Analytica in 2016:

"As we continue to learn more about the troubling allegations of the harvesting and use of personal data by Cambridge Analytica, Rep. Mimi Walters remains silent.

"Maybe it is because she paid Cambridge Analytica $20,000 in 2016?

"Time and time again, Mimi Walters jumps at the opportunity to tout her record on consumer advocacy, then turns around and sells out her constituents to powerful special interests no matter the harm to consumers, their privacy, or their pocketbooks. Just last year, Mimi voted to reverse a landmark FCC privacy rule that opens the door for the biggest telecom companies to sell customer data, after taking $47,450 from the telecom industry.

"I know from my years of work taking on Wall Street banks and powerful financial institutions who cheat middle-class families that it doesn’t matter where you live or who you vote for – no one likes being cheated. The 45th district deserves someone who will stand up for them, not sell them out to bad actors like Cambridge Analytica."

Katie has built a strong campaign earning early endorsements from Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren and was the first House challenger to receive the endorsement from EMILY’s List. Publicly released polling in CA-45 shows that Katie Porter’s profile and message not only make her the best-positioned Democrat to emerge from the CA-45 jungle primary, but also the one most likely to defeat Mimi Walters in the general election.

Katie Porter is a UC Irvine Professor of Law, mother of three, and consumer advocate who has spent decades taking on the big banks that hurt middle-class families – and winning. Now, she's taking that fight against the powerful special interests to Washington.
