Katie Porter for Congress

Civil Rights and Equality

Katie is committed to working towards a society where all Americans can live their authentic lives free from discrimination and hate.

That includes preventing people from being turned away from healthcare, housing or other services due to prejudice. She was proud to co-sponsor the Equality Act, which would ban the discimination of people based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Katie worked on legislation to investigate hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Inslander community in light of the disturbing rise in anti-Asian hate crimes that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Katie understands that our economy and our democracy are strongest when we root out racial injustice. Law enforcement must keep everyone in our community safe, including those in their custody. She voted for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to improve policing practices. She has introduced legislation to address racial bias in our healthcare system and to allow people with disabilities to participate fully in our society
