Katie Porter for Congress

For Immediate Release

June 2, 2018

Irvine -- Leading congressional candidate Katie Porter today announced the endorsement of The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

“The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is pleased to announce that we are officially endorsing Katie Porter for Congress in the 2018 primary for the California 45th District of the U.S. House of Representatives. While advocating for expanded Brady Background Checks, closing existing loopholes, supporting Extreme Risk laws, bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and other common sense gun policies may seem easy given that the overwhelming majority of Americans support these measures consistent with the Second Amendment, we recognize the courage it takes to stand up against the corporate gun lobby.”

Gun violence prevention is a key issue in Katie Porter’s campaign and Katie has refused to accept any money from the NRA or from people who work there.

“Like many of you, I am tired of seeing Mimi Walters offer her thoughts and prayers after every mass shooting, and then voting however the NRA wants -- regardless of our families’ safety,” said Katie Porter.

“That’s why I am proud to have the endorsement from The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and honored to stand with them in their mission to create a safer America by cutting gun deaths in half by 2025. I am also so proud to stand with the incredible local leaders of the Orange County Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Chapter.

“Common sense gun reform is one of the key issues in my campaign because it is what matters to so many families here in the 45th. In Congress, I will fight for a ban on assault weapons, mandatory background checks on all gun sales, and a healthcare system that provides comprehensive mental health treatment.

“Orange County families have made their feelings heard, time and again, that common sense gun protections are our values. That’s why I am running for Congress  – to stand up to special interests like the NRA and stand up for Orange County families.”

Katie has not only refused to accept money from the NRA, she has pledged not to accept campaign contributions from corporate PACs, big banks, big oil, or big pharma.

Katie has built a strong campaign earning early endorsements from Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren and was the first House challenger to receive the endorsement from EMILY’s List.

A new poll of likely voters commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by PPP shows Katie Porter leading incumbent Congresswoman Mimi Walters by three points, 46 to 43 percent.

Katie Porter is a UC Irvine Professor of Law, mother of three, and consumer protection attorney who has spent decades taking on the big banks that hurt middle-class families – and winning. Now, she's taking that fight against the powerful special interests to Washington.
