Meet Katie

Katie Porter is serving her second term in Congress fighting for Orange County families. She is running for reelection in California's 47th Congressional District which includes Irvine, Costa Mesa, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.

  • Prior to being elected to Congress, Katie taught consumer law at UC Irvine.

  • Katie is a single parent to three school aged kids. She’s spent her career as a consumer advocate taking on the big banks that hurt middle-class families – and winning.

  • Katie is a national leader in consumer protection and has won big victories against financial institutions who cheat consumers both in Congress and before she was elected.

  • As an advocate, Katie has sought reforms that help families get a fair shake in our economy. She has been a key player in the fight against abusive credit card fees and, in 2010, helped pass important federal credit card protections for families.

  • Katie’s biggest joy is being a mom to her three children. They live in Irvine, where she was a long-time leader in her sons’ cub scout pack.

  • Katie refuses to take a dime from corporate PACs and lobbyists. In Congress, she has always stood up to the powerful special interests and leaders of both parties to do what’s right for Orange County families.

  • As a Consumer Protection Attorney, Katie Porter has spent nearly twenty years fighting powerful interests and Wall Street banks on behalf of consumers and families. She’s a national leader in consumer protection and has won big victories against financial institutions who cheat consumers.

Endorsements

Previous Arrow

“In her short time in Congress, Katie has already distinguished herself through her work in the House Financial Service Committee, building on her lifelong commitment to protecting the American consumer. The people of the 45th Congressional District are fortunate to have such an effective champion to represent them.”

Stonewall Democrats

“While the House was passing historic nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans this month, the Trump-Pence Administration spent the last month attacking LGBTQ healthcare and trying to kick LGBTQ people out of homeless shelters. The choice for pro-equality voters couldn't be clearer. [Katie Porter] has been an invaluable partner in the fight for full, lived LGBTQ equality.”

Equality CA

“In 2018, we elected pro-choice champions in every corner of the country—from Des Moines to Orange County to Dallas—to fight back against the GOP’s extreme anti-choice ideology. We know the fight for reproductive freedom is going to be front and center in 2020 and partnering with our allies in the House is critical for ensuring the right to access to care is possible for women and families in all 50 states”

NARAL

“ In order to make progress on climate in the next Congress, it is essential that we re-elect these first-term members who have made our environment and our future a top priority.”

League of Conservation Voters

“Newly elected Democratic congresswomen are already proving what a positive influence their leadership and fresh perspectives bring to Congress. They got to work on day one, supporting legislation that would end the Trump shutdown and re-open the federal government. They have become prominent voices in discussions around expanding affordable health care access, defending voting rights, protecting the environment and other policies that would move our country forward. EMILY’s List is fully committed to helping re-elect these impressive new members, whose victories in tight swing districts in 2018 helped us flip the House and elect a record number of women to Congress.”
