Katie Porter’s Senate Bid Endorsed by the California School Employees Association

CSEA joins other unions, good government advocates, and progressive groups praising Porter’s run for the U.S. Senate

IRVINE – Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA), candidate for U.S. Senate in California, was endorsed today by the California School Employees Association (CSEA), AFL-CIO, representing a quarter million school support staff throughout the state. CSEA joins a chorus of other unions, good government advocates, and progressive groups praising Porter’s run for the U.S. Senate.

“Throughout her time in Congress, Katie Porter has been a fighter for schools and school employees – the rare representative who is always willing to listen and learn from school support staff on the ground about what we need to keep our students learning and our schools running,” said Adam Weinberger, CSEA’s President. “It’s clear that Katie will be the champion we need, ensuring that students, school support staff, and the hard-working members of organized labor have a voice in the U.S. Senate.”

The California School Employees Association is the largest classified school employee union in the United States, with nearly 800 local affiliates across the state. Many of their workers serve as paraeducators, custodial and maintenance workers, food service workers, school safety officers, bus drivers, or office clerks, among the many classified roles at K–12 schools, community college districts, and county offices of education.

“California’s school support staff are critical to keeping our educational institutions running, so I’m especially honored to receive the support and endorsement of CSEA and its members,” said Porter. “It’s because of school support staff that I’m even able to do my job: from the bus driver who safely delivers my daughter to school to the custodian who’s found my son’s glasses many times, classified school employees are essential partners to me and many working parents. I have tremendous respect and gratitude for all school support staff, and I look forward to fighting for them in the United States Senate.”

Porter has been a consistent champion for workers throughout her time in Congress. Along with CSEA, Rep. Porter has also earned the support of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), the Communications Workers of America (District 9), the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 441, IBEW Local 180, IBEW Local 569, and Adjunct Faculty United American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 6106.

Rep. Katie Porter is running for the U.S. Senate to shake up the status quo in Washington and unrig the rules bought and paid for by corporate special interests. The only candidate in the race to reject federal lobbyist money and swear off corporate PAC checks since Day 1, Porter is the warrior Californians can trust to speak truth to power and hold greedy corporations, special interests, and government bureaucrats – of both parties – accountable. She maintains a commanding lead over her Democratic opponents among younger voters, Latino voters, and progressives – all of whom are expected to turn out in high numbers in 2024.
